Why do you gift at Christmas? + Sustainable gift ideas

Christmas is coming and it’s time for gifts. But some gifts are more sustainable than others, so here comes the question:

How to gift in a sustainable way?

The first thing you should know is why you are gifting.

You gift because you have to

Classic Secret Santa with your friends or co-workers.

Let’s be honest, most of the time we have to buy a present to someone who we don’t care about.

Secret Santa is a very fun idea, but we always end up going to Tiger to buy things that are not really useful and that are made and wrapped in plastic.

Suggestion

Decide not to participate or suggest gifting homemade food or pastries or doing an activity together.

Nobody wants a funny Tiger doll …

You gift because it excites you

When we get excited about gifting it is usually because the recipient of our present is someone we love and care about, be it a family member, friend or partner.

In this case, it is assumed that you know the person well, about what they need or what they can be excited to receive.

Choose to buy something that person needs, and if it is second-hand or handmade, much better.

Suggestions
1. Food basket: For gourmets, you can buy a second-hand wicker basket or even a cardboard box that you have at home, decorate it and fill it with special products that you know that person likes but that they do not buy day by day because they are more expensive or because they are not products for daily consumption.

2. Decoration: Is that person you gift moving / redecorating their home? Ask them what they need and try to find everything second hand / vintage. Another alternative is to shop at local furniture stores. It will be more expensive, but surely you will find very special and good quality items.

3. Clothes / Accessories: If your special person never knows what to wear and continually complains about their wardrobe, help them tidy it up and find out what clothes / accessories they urgently need. If they are a fashion lover, you can always invest in a vintage garment that they can wear on special occasions. You can also keep an eye on sustainable brands.

4. Handmade by you: Surely anything that is made by you is going to make that person feel special. Your gift will depend on your skills. Do you know how to sew, paint, sculpt, cook? Your skills can become the best gift!

In the end, the most important thing about a gift is not the gift itself, but the intention behind it.

And you, why do you gift?
