IS FAST FASHION FEMINIST?

Fast Fashion is NOT feminist. You want to know why?

In April 2013, Rana Plaza, one of the textile factories in Bangladesh, collapsed. 1,130 people were killed and 2,500 injured, the biggest industrial tragedy since the 1980s.

The Rana Plaza workers were mostly young women between 18-25 years old forced to work because of poverty and earning around 22 cents an hour.

After this disaster, the surviving workers had to go back to work the next day at the same place where friends and family had died the day before. Does this seem feminist to you?

T-shirts with a feminist message went viral after Dior launched them for the first time in its 2017 collection.

But what is behind this supposed feminist claim?

  • The rapid growth of fast fashion goes hand in hand with the increase in exploited women in factories (from 34% in 1980 to 62% in 2010).
  • Most fast fashion companies produce in sweatshops like Rana Plaza.
  • In countries like India, Bangladesh or China, 80% of workers are women who work in terrible and unsafe conditions, in factories that do not follow any safety regulations, where they are victims of psychological, physical and sexual abuse and their health is affected by the continuous contact with toxic products.
  • In addition, they are the lowest paid workers in the world. Their salaries are well below the minimum wage, which means that the endless hours of work they are obliged to do don’t even allow them to live with dignity and, in the event of getting pregnant, they get fired.
  • 9 out of 10 female workers in Bangladesh cannot even buy food for themselves and their families due to the very low wages they receive, which leaves them with the only option of skipping meals or eating unhealthy if they do not have a man at home that brings a higher salary.
  • Fast fashion favors economic imbalance in the world and creates more poverty.

Apparently, fast fashion giants do not have enough trillions to ensure their workers safe and dignified conditions.

Paying a minimum wage to factory workers would only add 1% more, on average, to the price of clothing.

Do you still believe these companies promote feminism or rather just want to profit from this movement?

How can we enjoy fashion without forgetting our feminist values?

  • Firstly, you need to be aware that these companies are not feminist and that the shirts with feminist phrases aren’t either. This is not about pointing at those who have bought these shirts or fast fashion in the past, it is about that from now on our way of consuming changes.
  • Talk to your favorite fast fashion brands, let them know that if they want to keep you as a client, they must switch to a more ethical model.
  • On the other hand, by putting your money in companies that do care about doing things right, you are contributing towards a more equal world.
  • And if you want a t-shirt with a feminist message, why not customize one that you no longer wear?

Ending fast fashion will be another feminist success and we will achieve it together.
